The CHIME  (Collaborative teaching for young and diverse children with high-intensity needs and multiple disabilities in blended environments) initiative at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) aims to recruit, retain, and graduate Master’s level students to serve young children aged 3 to 5 with high-intensity needs and diverse backgrounds in inclusive settings. It focuses on enhancing competencies of early childhood special education teachers, aligning with UIC’s commitment to justice, accessibility, and equity in education. CHIME emphasizes culturally responsive practices, collaborative teaching, and establishing a sustainable resource center within the UIC College of Education. The project envisions the UIC Early Childhood Special Education Cooperative as a lasting outcome, addressing the critical shortage of professionals in the field.
